How to Maintain Color-Treated Hair

The average color treatment costs between $65 and $200.

Color-treated hair has the tendency to fade quickly if the right steps aren't taken to maintain the color. How do you make sure that your expensive color treatment doesn't get washed down the drain?

Here are some tips and tricks we have gathered to help you maintain your color treated hair.

Wait before you wash

If you can wait at least 24 hours before you shampoo your hair, do it.

Ideally, you could wait even 3-4 days. The longer you wait to wash, the more time you give the color to properly set in the hair.

This will help the color treated hair last longer.

Don't forget that if you aren't planning to wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner, try not to get it wet at all!

Use a shower cap to protect your color-treated hair from the shower water. This way the color doesn't unnecessarily fade.

Color Treated Hair Needs Cooler Water

When washing your hair, make sure to use a little bit cooler water than you are used to. Even though hotter water may feel better, it is worse for your hair.

Cold water helps seal the cuticles, allowing it to keep the color from washing out as easily.

This is a tip that will help lengthen the number of weeks between salon appointments.

Color Protecting Shampoo and Conditioner

There is color protecting shampoo and conditioner that will help maintain the original color your stylist put in.

Color protecting shampoo and conditioner offers a lower pH than other products. This is more gentle for the hair and helps maintain the luster and color.

These products will most likely be sulfate and paraben free. This means that your color won't be battered with chemicals when you wash it.

This will keep the hair looking more vibrant for a longer amount of time.

Look for these products with added protein and moisturizing ingredients that can help with breakage when you are dealing with chemically processed and color treated hair.

You will want to wash your hair less when you get it colored. Keep it to around 2-3 times a week. Because of this, remember to use dry shampoo on days you don't want to wash your hair.

Pro-Tip! If you have brightly colored hair, consider getting some of the color and adding just a little to your conditioner.

This little bit of color will deposit into the hair as you wash, helping it look like you just stepped out of the salon!

Maintain Regular Hair Trims

Did you know that dead ends don't hold color well? The color here will fade more quickly than the rest of your hair.

This means that getting a regular trim will help your hair looking the best it can be.

Create a Healthy Hair Regimen

All hair needs a healthy hair regime, including color treated hair. Find the right mixture of procedures, treatments, products, and cuts that will work best for you. This will make your hair color last for as long as possible.
